Chapter 5

She was so busy—between trying to keep up with her own work and trying to be a good caretaker to Faith—that Friday snuck up on her. She spent the day in town, getting her hair, nails and even toes done, wishing—as she knew Faith did since she'd whined about wanting to go continuously since she'd mentioned she was going—that Faith was there by her side.

Cate barely got back to the house she steadfastly refused to think of as "home" in time to change and step into Faith's room to do a twirl for her friend.

"Damn, you clean up nice!"

Feeling surprisingly free and giddy, Cate giggled. "Thank you!"

Then Faith leaned forward and whispered, "Close the door—I have something juicy to tell you."

As she did as her friend asked, Cate warned as she was doing it, "Okay, but make it quick. I don't have a lot of time to get back into town."

"He's not coming out here to pick you up?"

Cate shook her head. "No, since we're eating at the Scottish Inn on the other side of Big Pines, it didn't seem smart to make him drive all the way out here, then all the way back twice. So, we decided to just meet there."

To say nothing of the fact that she didn't want Dennis to have to deal with Rome. In fact, if the fates could conspire that the two never meet in any of either of their lifetimes, she would be ever so grateful. But she didn't mention any of that to Faith.

Sitting down on the bed, she said, "Okay, spill. What's gone on? What could go on around here? It's hardly a hot bed of gossip."

"He kicked her out! He finally kicked that c-word out!"

Cate felt as if she had no libretto to this scene, although Faith seemed to assume that she would know what she was talking about. "Huh, what?"

"Billie! She's gone, finally. Rome all but threw her out when she complained one time too many that he never spent any time with her. She even went so far as to complain that he spent too much time with me, and she even dragged you into it!"

"Me? What'd I ever do to her? I barely know the woman, and Rome and I can't stand each other. Boy, has she got the wrong end of the stick with that argument."

Faith let that remark about how she and Rome felt about each other go. They might be at odds now, but she remembered how Cate had once felt about her big brother, and, despite what might have happened between the two of them, she thought those feelings still burned somewhere within her friend, even if it might be buried beneath layers of anger and pain.

Rome was the unknown element in this equation. He kept his feelings to himself, for the most part, and had always been damned hard to read. But Faith had a feeling that the fact that Billie had gotten herself kicked to the curb on the same day that Cate was going on her first date in Lord knew how long was not a coinkydink.
